Kenyan health authorities confirmed an eighth Ebola infection on Sunday after testing 38 people linked to the initial case.
Director-General for Health Patrick Amoth said the patient is a 49-year-old man who worked as a patient attendant cleaning utensils and linens at a Nairobi facility. He developed fever, headache and muscle pain on Saturday, was placed in quarantine and returned a positive result the next day. Officials believe he contracted the virus from Kenya's first patient, a man from the Democratic Republic of Congo who died at a Nairobi hospital on October 5.
Four additional cases surfaced on Saturday, including three health workers who treated the index patient and one relative of the deceased. All seven previously confirmed patients remain in stable condition. The ministry reported that 128 contacts of the first case are still in quarantine. Kenya has reported no new travel, trade or gathering restrictions, following World Health Organization guidance, while expanding surveillance and community messaging.
The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain, which has no available vaccine. In the DRC the virus has now reached North Ubangi province, where two cases including one death have been recorded, adding to more than 9,400 total cases across eight provinces.
